Defaulting On Car Loans

One distinct difference between Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia is how cheap cars are here. So cheap that buying multiple cars and changing ones cars have become like a national past time.

The thing is, the trend of cars being repossessed by their finance companies within months of being purchase is also on the rise!

Doesn’t it just makes you wonder how could people commit to a new car if they are not sure that they can pay off the loan? If you peruse car advertisements, you would notice that most of them are selling their cars before the first or second year of loan is even completed!

How lucky are these people that we do not have a credit rating system that they have in other countries. Because with some of their history of taking car loans and defaulting after a few months, I could just imagine what kind of negative ratings they have in their record.

Of course, in those country where you are subjected to the credit rating system, there are also services to help with credit repair and companies that help to improve credit. It’s only right that such services exist because if one’s credit rating is very poor, loan is hard to get and interest rates will be extremely high.

But come to think of it, although this useful service that helps to improve credit score and settle credit dispute is good, I wonder if it will make folks less responsible about their financial matter.

As it is, over here where there is not credit rating system that will influence their interest rates and ability to take loans, there are folks who kept buying and having their cars repossessed without blinking an eye!

Invasion Of The Disney Princesses

A few weeks ago, I overheard my daughter Qi said in response to something that her sister was saying.

“Then I will marry my own Prince Charming!”

Qi, my coming-to-ONLY-3-years-old daughter is glibly talking about Prince Charming and marriage!

Non-mothers might not know it but I think parents of other young daughters are having the same experience right now.

Our girls are going mad about all these Disney Princesses!

Perhaps the rage for the Disney Princesses started when a magazine called Princess was published. So far I managed to limit my girls to only three issues because one issue cost nearly $5 and reading material of this kind does not last long in our household.

However I know of other parents who buy every issues and last month when my husband and his friends went to Singapore, I was amused to learn that I was not the only wife who told my husband to get the latest issue.

The men failed but one wife got the coveted issue from Kuala Lumpur!

Both my daughters know every single one of the Disney Princesses although they’ve only watch “Beauty & The Beast” and a little bit of the “Sleeping Beauty” which we bought only last weekend.

When it comes to drawing, my daughter Eu draws nothing else but Princess pictures – with Aurora from the Sleeping Beauty being her most favorite subject.

They regularly paraded around the house with my mother in law’s old sleeping coats as their princess gowns, announced themselves as the princess-of-the-week and demanded that everyone else addressed them as such.

And we have had a “Belle”, “Ariel” and of course “Aurora” over the last several months.

Qi however is less princess-y and she assumed both the princess and the villain. More often than not, she preferred to be the “Wicked Witch” or “Wicked Queen” and lately, the “Evil Stepmother”.

And it’s not only the kids who are sucked into this. Mothers including myself are equally “in love” with these beautiful characters and it is only the question of cost that stopped me from decorating their room with Princess theme (except cheap stickers and posters from the magazines).

So, how Disney Princess-crazy are you?

Life With Oil & Gas Engineers

It’s funny because prior to going to university, I did not know a single engineer in my life. There was no engineer in my direct family and I am not sure if any of my family members then (besides my father) even knew anyone who works as an engineer.

And since I knew nobody personally who works as one, it’s one of those hazy profession that I never much thought about except knowing that they construct buildings, build roads and all those things.

Then when I was in the university, my biggest group of friends were made up of engineering students. Later, not only did I marry one, our household is also made up of another two other engineers!

So what do I think about engineers now?

Their work knows no calendar.

Generally oil & gas engineers are well paid but what some may not realized is that they work on a calendar and time of their own.

Public holidays and weekends can mean nothing and when there is a project going on and they are involved, you can expect phone calls at odd hours or they can leave for work at 3 o’clock in the morning!

And those on shift work for 12 hours.

They work with weird structures

Before I came to Brunei and specifically, the Belait district, I have never thought about how we get oil from under the ground.

“Platforms” were for shoes, “donkeys” were animals and “flare stacks” were not in my vocabulary at all.

Now even my kids know the “nodding donkeys”, which is the Belait landmark.

While I can tell you what this missile-looking structure is for.

Their job can be dirty.

I used to vaguely thought that since engineers are paid well, they must work in comfortable environments too.

But two of the engineers in my household often came home with overalls full of grease much to the exasperation of their wife and mother who struggled daily to wash these stubborn stain away.

And you don’t want to see these grease which no store bought detergents can get rid of.

They live in overall and boots.

They may have high flying job titles but many of these men (and women) can’t wear any designer shirts (blouses) and ties (or skirts) to work.

In fact, their most common attire is the ubiquitous overall donned not only by labourers who cut grass on the roadside but also graduate engineers, senior engineers and even the big bosses in oil & gas companies (during certain times).

And you can bet that even though some engineers can afford to work in shirts and pants (or blouses and skirts for the lady engineers), they have overall, boots, hard hat ready in their trunk of their car.

And a lady engineer friend told me that at some factories, one can’t even wear make-up.

Their work area can look chaotic.

Since they use overalls for work, you can imagine the kind of things they work with.

These are just some of the objects lying around oil & gas companies which to me, not only looks alienish but what bothers me most is how untidy they look and stressful to the untrained eyes.

And you can bet that this chaos is the least of their stress.

They are handy with machines

Perhaps its only the men at my home but they are sure handy with machines. We need only holler whenever something are not working (water pump, lawn mower or computers) and we can count on them for jobs like cleaning the air-con which saves us servicing cost.

Their offshore trips can be unpredictable

Engineers whose duty involved going offshore have to be prepared for last minute change of plans (arriving back later than scheduled and sometimes at a different port).

Worse, the spouses of engineers’ who went offshore might get news that their offshore trip has been extended another week…

But that’s just life with oil & gas engineers.

It might be hard in the beginning but after a while, it’s just something that engineers and their family members get used to sooner or later.

Go Black For The Hyundai Genesis

As my husband and I were walking on a busy Gadong street last weekend, our attention was immediately caught by a black sedan.

We realized that even a middle range sedan like a Toyota Camry will look distinguished when it is black in colour.

Much like the latest Hyundai Genesis.

The name might not exactly excite those who favor traditional prestigious sedans like BMW or Mercedes or even Lexus.

But even they might be surprised, as I was, when I read this particular Hyundai Genesis review illustrated with several very flattering pictures of the sedan including one very striking shot of it in shiny black.

To be honest, at first glance at that particular angle, this black 2009 Hyundai Genesis could even make one mistake it for one of those more luxurious sedan range.

I would not go into the specifics here but those of you who are planning to get a sedan, read the 2009 Hyundai Genesis reviews so you will not be spending unnecessarily on bigger names when you could get the same or even better quality car at a much more reasonable price – and this car did have a very good review.

And if you are getting this car, make sure you get the black model.
