Life With Young Kids

Filed in My Daughters | Random 4 Comments

One friend swore against long distance travelling with her young kids – as she would say, it is not a holiday as all she would do is cater to their demands and needs.

This came to my mind today at a restaurant, when I had to leave the table 3 – 4 times to accompany my kids to the toilet. Imagine the calories burned and I have not even finished my food then. Now you know why having kids is like taking safe diet pills – you WILL lose weight!

Eating had to be done whenever I can, on top of serving and feeding them. Towards the end, I ate alone as my husband took them for a walk instead of trying to force them to sit at the table, doing nothing – except attract unwanted attention.

But that’s just life with young kids with their kind of characters.

There are kids who are content to sitting quietly and properly – but that’s not ours and we have learn to accept them as they are.

Ghost Stories

Surfing the internet for information on skin problem, specifically eczema treatments, which I occasionally suffer from whenever I handled harsh household chemicals without glove, I stumbled on a post I read years back.

I know I’d regret reading it – especially after I read the part about the highway we regularly travelled on – but that did not stop me from finishing the post.

But this also reminded me about a trip we made to a local bookstore recently.

As I was browsing the shelves close to where my children were, I overheard them talking about a particular book. At a glance, I noticed that it was a Malay ghost story – for children, complete with a hideous drawing of a “pontianak” on the cover.

Before they could skim through the other pictures in the book, I quickly took it away and explained that the cover was drawn by a lousy artist – luckily they did not understand the title or there would be more explanation to do!

I was looking for a few good stories in Malay but it was disappointing that not only are there very few books in Malay, the ones they prominently displayed were ghost stories – which in my opinion is not something kids should be reading.

Savvy Shopper

There was this quiz I came across aimed at promoting online security – for women (who like to shop online).

Since internet surfing and online shopping is like second nature to many of us, it is good to be reminded once in a while what we take for granted most of the time.

It’s not all technical – such as this question on sizing strategy.

When taking measurements or choosing the right size for your online clothing purchases:
[a] Suck in your stomach or stand really straight or hop around
[b] Get a friend’s help to measure you
[c] Choose sizes which are smaller than your measurement hoping to fit in when you have lost weight (which reading the apidexin reviews may help)

Seriously, some of us ARE guilty of being blissfully ignorant of the threats and safety issues when it comes to shopping online.

We all know the situation – we reached a page filled with beautiful images of fashionable clothes or trendy handbags  with even sweeter prices – and before we know it, we would be in the payment page, expertly filling our credit card information.

Who can remember that we are supposed to read the fine lines at the bottom of the page or look for the little padlock at the side or that we are supposed to shop only from reputable stores?

Climbing Kinabalu

Filed in Random | Sabah Leave a comment

When I did my research on the rates for the accommodation in Kinabalu Park, I came across many complaints posted online over the exorbitant rates to climb Mount Kinabalu nowadays.

In 2007, a dorm bed in Laban Rata cost only RM30, but in January 2008, the cost with meals included (a packed box, buffet lunch, dinner and breakfast) jumped to RM188, an increase of some 500%. (Costly stay, long wait to climb Kinabalu)

Seeing the figure, I could imagine their shock and frustration – and it is just as well that I have never seriously considered climbing it.

Actually, if pushed, I could make the effort to attempt this feat.

Surely my daily going up and down the staircase in my house, most times with a 10kg squirming and protesting “barbell” in arm which comfortably takes the place of equipments like a pull up bar, must have help in some ways in terms of stamina and fitness.

But then again, why get stressed over the mountain when one could simply enjoy being near it.

8000 Ringgit Lodge

If asked about the must-go destination in Sabah, my answer would always be the same : Kinabalu Park.

Even thinking about this place now conjures memories of crisp mountain air and fresh jungle smell, damp smell of rustic chalets and vivid moments of the countless of times I have been to this heavenly spot in Sabah.

I was planning another holiday here until I saw their latest rates.

Out of curiosity, I did a little research through various tour agents and found that for Nepenthes Lodge, the chalet which my family rented in 2007, you can get it for RM685/760, RM725/789 and RM915.

But it’s the published international rates quoted by its operator that was beyond belief.

Rajah Lodge is the biggest and imposing lodge in the whole park and we have never stayed here because the old rates is only worthwhile if you come in a large group and could make full use of the space. This lodge does not have perks like a private jacuzzi, spa facilities or even spa cover. No sauna room let alone gym room.

Yet this lodge which used to be below RM2000 is now yours for a night at RM8000. That’s USD2500 per day!
