Bali In Short

Prior to our trip to Bali, I read everything that I could, I should admit, about where to stay.

I was both excited and dismayed to know that in Ubud alone, there were more than 50 hotels, villas, B&B, home stays etc. I was stuck for choices with many change of hearts for several weeks – in this district alone!

At one point when I was in visible agony with having to decide on only ONE out of several very promising hotels, my husband very helpfully told me to toss a coin…

The hotels I finally chose – we stayed in two over the 3 nights that we were there – were lovely.

Bali was also kind to us that our travel insurance the likes of Medicare part D plans and pack of first aid kit remained unused. Nobody had any problems during and after our trip even though I forgot to use the sterilizing tablets when my kids enjoyed the jacuzzi in our room and we recklessly brush our teeth with tap water (travel advice cautions tourists to use only bottled water for everything).

I was completely charmed and suffice to say that it is now on my list of destinations to return to in the future.

Millionaire Grass-Cutter

One of the interesting people that I come across on a regular basis is our grass-cutter.

An Indian man in his mid or late thirties, he convinced us to engage his service within a few days of us moving into our house more than a year ago – effectively taking over the service from another grass cutter who dejectedly told us, when he came a few days later, that he used to service our lawn for many years before we moved in.

As for our grass-cutter, one of his sales pitch when he approached us then was telling us that he does the lawns of nearly all the houses in our small neighbourhood – with his one and sometimes two assistants, using none of those fancy mowers the likes of ariens zero turn mowers but rather, hand-held cutters with metal blades and nylon strings!

Still, we are happy with him and his services, no doubt helped by his impressive PR skill – a warm greeting whenever we see him. I especially liked his anything-can-do attitude with a smile while my husband was won over by his “Chinese clients are the best – they always pay on the spot”.

It is a pity that someone with his ability is doing only grass-cutting business.

But as my husband reminded me, he may be a grass-cutter here but he might be a millionaire back home – living in a mansion with a team of men doing HIS lawn.

Evicted

Along one of the nicest road that leads to and from Bandar Seri Begawan city centre, with tall trees and orchids on the road dividers, there are these blocks of old and rundown flats.

Recently however, this area was cordoned off with a notice stating that upgrading work is taking place.

Yes, these flats need to be renovated. This is a kind of place where a new coat of paint or simply fixing the broken windows or cracked walls are not enough. Even without planning to install fancy Murray Feiss lighting or state of the art AV system, electrical wiring work is surely required. Perhaps a lot of water piping work too.

But I wonder what will happen to the tenants of these flats who would surely be asked to leave.

While it is easy to simply tell them to find another place, a glance at the rental listings in the local paper would straightaway tell you that this will be a distressing year for many of these families.

Bedtime Stories

One of my nightly routines with my two older kids is reading them bedtime stories.

Even though my eldest can read well now, she still ask for one and usually, I will read two stories – one for each of them.

On some nights when I can read only one, the younger one will usually choose. The problem with letting her choose is that when she likes a book, she wants it all the time.

And I have read the same book nearly every night – for a few weeks now!

They know the story so well that I cannot make the slightest mistake. At times when I am tired  and read the words wrongly, they will notice. If that’s not tricky enough, I need to get all my characters’ voices right – tone, accent and pitch – every single time.

Because they are not the lie-down-quietly kind of listeners, it never fails to amaze me that despite somersaulting in bed or rummaging through bags or cabinets when I am reading to them – they DO pay attention.

This reminds me of a friend who works in a bank and who has no time or energy for bedtime stories after a day in her front line banking jobs. Yes, two kids demands are nothing like the hundreds of impatient and sometimes cranky clients.

But these two kept me on my toes – way after office hours too!
