My Karmic Question

Earlier, I caught a drama halfway but interesting enough to continue watching it till the end.

It’s a common enough story of a woman, married into wealthy family and gladly left her poor mother. In one particularly moving scene, she went to her mother’s simple home, clad in designer outfit with glittery necklace and dazzling raymond weil on her wrist to send some gifts with an instruction that her mother may not contact her anymore.

She then had a happy life with a loving husband and doting parents-in-law and everything was rosy – until the last few weeks of her pregnancy. Wrecked with guilt, she seek forgiveness from her mother and after a difficult labour, managed to deliver safely.

However, she died soon after.

My thoughts were, in this situations, who had the worst karma?

Was is the mother whose child disowned her for being poor? And even after she forgave her repentant daughter, lost her to death?

Or was it the daughter who rose out of poverty when she married a wealthy and kind family only to die in labour?

And if such unhappiness in life is due to karma, punishment for bad deeds done in our previous lives, what goes around finally coming around albeit in another lifetime – why should we feel sorry for those in sorry situations?

Shouldn’t we say, that’s karma back to punish them – so serve them right?

This is a question for those amongst us who are fond of wishing that karma punishes those who offend us.
