Traffic Jam In West Coast Sabah

Filed in Sabah | When I Do Travel Leave a comment

Unlike our drama-filled ferry ride from Muara (Brunei) to Menumbok (Sabah), our ride for the trip back was a breeze.

The drive from Kota Kinabalu to Menumbok Ferry Terminal though, was a different story.

On normal days, this part of the trip takes about 2.5 hours. On NORMAL days.

The day that we chose to return was obviously not a normal day because we encountered slow traffic from Kinarut (about 15 mins from Kota Kinabalu) all the way to Beaufort.

An 1.5 hour trip that turned into nearly 3 hours!

Everyone was out in full force and cars were turning into every single junctions there were along this stretch. Not even the most daring drivers could over take.

Fortunately the last 60km was rather deserted – and we made up for lost time, pleaded with the ferryman to wait, willed time to slow down and telepathically shooed all animals off the road as we stepped on the gas pedal as much as we dared.

We reached the ferry terminal with only minutes to spare.

It was a moment worthy of any Amazing Race Asia episodes. The kind of moment that acne-prone individuals  would scramble to get their treatment for acne supplies ready for the eruption that was sure to come from the STRESS – of nearly missing the ferry and the possibility of having to take the alternative : 14 hours road trip!

Save Atkinson Clock Tower

Not living in Kota Kinabalu anymore, I came to know of this development only recently from a Bruneian friend who was approached to invest in this particular project.

The so-called Atkinson Tower is a 16 storey high commercial builed poised to be built at the side of the city with lush green trees most visible from one of our main tourist attraction, Gaya Street Sunday Market.

This is also where the Atkinson Clock Tower is prominently standing and keeping time for the city.

Not simply any tower, this clock tower built in 1905 is an all-wood and no-nail structure and is the oldest standing structure in the whole of Sabah that survived World War II.

Ordinarily, a new shopping mall is an interesting and a much looked-forward-to development in any city. More store choices, more dining outlets and more entertainment centres.

However, if it threatens to clear one of the most beautiful side of our otherwise all-concrete-jungle of a city AND a historical landmark, it changes the whole perspective.

We may not always appreciate the Atkinson Clock Tower BUT that does not mean that we want it to “disappear”.

It is part of our city heritage and this mall is putting the Atkinson Clock Tower in danger of disappearing from public view.

Yes, with progress comes sacrifices.

But Kota Kinabalu resident and anyone who loves Kota Kinabalu must think hard if we really want to sacrifice this pleasant green forested hill and historical not to mention, very picturesque clock tower – FOR YET ANOTHER MALL!

Do your part to make this issue known or join the Atkinson Clock Tower : Save Our Heritage Facebook Group and help keep this part of our city in it’s rightful place.

On that hill. In full view of everyone. At all time.

Slow Moving Orang Utan

Filed in Sabah Leave a comment

Watching a Borneon gibbon doing its acrobatic moves at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park recently, it really looked as if it was putting on a show to demonstrate its agility and strength.

Such a different scenario from the orang utans as these primates moved very slowly most of the time – elegantly, as their movements are so often described.

On that particular day, they were in their most languid and laziest mood. Not meant as an offence, but they are just like men with beer belly, not thinking about how to get rid of stomach fat but where the next drinking session is!

Of course they are an interesting animal being one of the most intelligent primates.

But perhaps Sabah should also promote other native animals that are more active in nature such as the Sabah Rhino or Proboscis Monkey or the Borneon Gibbon.

To Malls, With Kids

Filed in Brunei | Parenting | Sabah Leave a comment

Brunei Times Square, the latest shopping mall and hotel in the country, is now open.

But unlike the rest of Bruneians, we have not set foot on this place since its soft opening day – and we may even wait until next year before doing so.

After all, what’s Brunei Times Square when even 1Borneo of Kota Kinabalu with over 400 stores fails to excite us.

Perhaps it is to do with having small kids that we no longer enjoy shopping or even window shopping – as we use to. They are generally cooperative but dealing with their issues usually takes the most time that unless it is  a really necessary shopping trip, it is just not worth the effort.

Besides there is always online shopping – clothes, handbags, books, cosmetics down to items such as perfumes and even acne medicines are easily found by a simple click here and before you know it, you have a package to collect.

Maybe in 5 years time from now, we can enjoy malls and shopping again. By that time we won’t need to worry about finding a toilet within 5 mins or choose only eateries with baby chairs and kids-friendly menu.

Animal Park For Small Kids

Filed in My Daughters | Sabah | When I Do Travel Leave a comment

Judging from my kids’ enthusiasm when we brought them to visit the much smaller Lok Kawi Wildlife Park – we learn one thing.

It does not matter that this park has less than 10%  of the animals at Singapore Zoo.

To them, it’s fun because it has real live animals.

Even my father who visited this place for the first time saw plenty of things to photograph,  found a picnic area with a swimming pool and met some old colleagues who changed the field of their administrative and sales jobs from plants to animals!

So Lok Kawi Wildlife Park may be small and uninteresting to some – but my kids enjoyed it tremendously despite missing all feeding times, catching the orang utans in their most languid mood and tigers during their napping time – AGAIN!

Personally, I think they love it because it is small enough to walk around without being too tired!

Suffice to say, this is a must-go attraction for us whenever in Kota Kinabalu.
