Filial Piety

Today I was told of an old woman in her 90s who is left to wander homeless in a Sarawakian town – because none of her 10 children wanted to look after her.

But since this is just news passed down by word of mouth, I cannot be sure of its accuracy.

What we do know for sure was a similar case which made headlines in Malaysia last month – an old man who was thrown out of his son’s home right after he completed some surgery at the hospital for rheumatoid arthritis treatment or other such health problems.

I wonder what it must be like for this man to have the whole country know that he has done one of the worst thing a child can do to his parent. No matter how valid his reasons were, everyone will only remember one thing – that he should expect the same treatment when it is his turn to be old and helpless.
