What I Am Reading

When it comes to books, I am always drawn to fictional stories about humans and relationship set in rich Asian cultural and historical backgrounds. It is interesting to learn about cultural quirks, ancient traditions and local customs this way.

At home, I am alternating between three fictions by Asian writers (Kiran Desai, Arundhati Roy and Lisa See) – three books lying around and this is simply because none has grabbed my attention well enough.

One does piqued my interest in its references to Nushu, a secret writing used exclusively among women in southern China. I wondered too what “..front garden of the Ayemenem House, where she raised a fierce, bitter garden that people came all the way from Kottayam to see” with its patio planters and a marble cherub which “peed an endless silver arc into a shallow pool in which a single blue lotus bloomed” looked like.

But despite all this, my favorite read has nothing to do with anything Asian – culture or history and it’s written by an Irish man to boot!

Frank McCourt’s second autobiography is the book I read in the car on schooldays when I wait for the kids and as with his first book which I owned, I enjoyed his writing styles and looking forward to finishing this book.

What book are you reading now?

House Of Dream No More

Many of us in Brunei followed the recently concluded proceedings of the Legislative Council through the quickest way – Twitter.

Issues, comments and suggestions were tweeted by media representatives within minutes and with only 125 characters-limit, we get only the supposed-gist of the issue/replies made. Which was why when a certain point was raised and a bombshell-of-a-response was given, all those who were affected was in an uproar.

The reporters on duty could not have finished their daily reportings on the meetings fast enough for us that day.

In fact, I texted my husband immediately, despite the fact that he was offshore and would not be getting the message for a few more hours AND despite the fact that I had just half the news then. I could not resist from joining what I thought would be the mood of a lot of people in the country that day – confused, worried or perhaps even, panicked?

That particular controversial point is still a big question-mark right now but one thing is for sure, the dreams of many ordinary people for their “own” house of dreams with white picket fences, wood blinds, garden all around AND not having to pay rent all their lives may remain just that – a DREAM.

Set In France vs But First Italy

My small books collection was turned upside down during the weekends as I was deciding which books to bring for the Belait BookSwap this coming Sunday, 11th March.

Since I have no idea how book-swapping works (except that this coming one in OGDC Seria will include cupcakes!), I will offer books I liked the least.

And so I pulled a bunch of books, one in particular has been on my shelves for at least 5 years, to be put in my swapping pile. But after a while, I decided to read it first – and I mean for the first time, ever!

Drily-titled “Instructions for visitors“, I think I bought this during my crazy-about-European-countryside-phase, perhaps after I watched “Under The Tuscan Sun” (I have not read the book this movie was based on).

As dry as the title was, the content of this part-travelogue and part-diary, despite being set in France, was even duller in an annoying way. I managed 3 pages before I needed to stop and it was a relief to put it down. Just what it is with some writers who feel like they have to describe every single things in one paragraph that you get all sorts of jumbled-up images and scenarios; unconnected, unnecessary and really quite maddening!

Maybe it gets better further on but this book failed to engage me in one page and when it comes to judging books, this is a sin for me.

On the other hand, I randomly pulled out my read-and-loved copy of “Eat, Pray, Love” earlier today and decided to re-read the first chapter. My mind was literally sighing in pleasure when I reached the last line, “But first…Italy“.

This is a book that will stay on my shelf.

So yes, set-in-France will go to the Belait BookSwap and hopefully someone will enjoy it because it won’t be me.

Extra Activity

My kids are finally enrolled on an extra curricular activity.

In fact when I told them about it, they were so excited that my eldest demanded why couldn’t they start on that day itself!

I am also happy to be able to find a comfortable time for them to learn an extra skill – which was a little inconvenient to do when they were in the afternoon school sessions.

There are a few more activities I would love to get them to join – music, ballet, martial arts, tennis, swimming and even horse-riding as we do have this facility here (but since I am not into animals and I know that equestrian riding apparel cost a bomb, this has to be shelved, indefinitely).

So many plans!

But I will probably choose just one more activity and let them enjoy the rest of the days in the week playing as they wish – until riding their bicycles in our yard no longer hold any charm for them.

Those Pesky Angry Birds

Filed in At Home Leave a comment

One of the best holiday gift ideas I was asked about and approved for my kids last Christmas was this collection of 7 squeaky Angry Birds from my brother-in-law.

Being small and cute, the kids love them and those birds were taken all over the house.

They made many wild appearances during our recent Chinese New Year. One appeared in the picture I took of the reunion dinner, another on top of a basket of orange we used as prop during a family photo sessions and many others – and we did not noticed, who among my three were responsible to sneaking them into the shots.

In fact, we did not even notice those birds until we downloaded those pictures – and saw red, green and blue, EVERYWHERE!

Those birds sure made their way around the house but would have been lost in some corners in the house if I had not collected and put them on display, on some high cabinet.

In sight but out of reach.
