Houses will be stuffy even though all the windows are open and it is breezy outside if the orientation is wrong.
Apparently it has to do with location of the entrance which should face the prevailing wind direction – which for Brunei is northeast and southwest.
Then the size of the front entrance opening has to be smaller than the openings of the back exit so that the draught that goes in is forced to meander around the house before it goes out – or something like this. And this science makes sense, even to laymen like us.
What DOES NOT make sense is a house designed with enclosed toilets without any external windows.
It is expected forĀ intermediate terrace houses or intermediate apartment units – but when the house has at least 3 sides of external walls such as a semi-detached house, it can be difficult to understand why anyone would choose to have permanently dark and stuffy toilets totally dependent on exhaust fans for ventilation.
What a waste business opportunities for the developers as these kind of house design will immediately be chucked into the KIV folder – until their prices dropped so much you could re-locate the toilets yourself.
