The Impressive UMMC

There will be an interesting documentary on Discovery Health this coming October 5th 2008 about a man in Indonesia who was dubbed the “Treeman” because of these strange growth that looks very much like tree roots on his hands and feet.

The poor Javanese man who had suffered this strange condition must be extremely thankful that this rare health condition is finally on track to full recovery!

This documentary will highlight the journey of how Dr. Anthony A. Gaspari successfully diagnosed the “Treeman’s” condition and helped to make progress in his treatment program.

Dr. Gaspari is the Chief Dermatology at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), one of USA’s Top Hospital’s Safety And Quality for the third year running and much renown for their cardiac department.

In fact, heart patients might be interested to know that their Maryland Heart Center specializes in surgical treatment of valvular diseases including mitral valve repair and mitral valve surgery. It was stated that while most heart surgeons would do mitral valve replacement on diseased valve, UMMC pioneered the technique of repairing the mitral valve or the “inflow valve” of the main pumping chamber of the heart. This helps to increase long term survival rates, lower the risk of strokes and reduce the need for side effect treatment associated with the use of artificial valve.

So check out the other impressive success stories of the UMMC and don’t forget to catch the documentary this October!
